"There is no business like entertainment business" is probably not applicable for media groups that concentrate their programs on the environmental campaign.

A recent survey that placed entertainment programs at the top of the ranks did not include DAAI TV and Green Radio FM, two media organizations that have switched their focus to the environment.

Established in 2006 with a local broadcasting permit for Jakarta and Medan, the DAAI TV private television station dedicates almost all of its programs to the environment. The station was initiated by the Buddha Tzu Chi foundation, a Buddhist organization that assists poor people in Jakarta.

"We want to be different from the other nine television stations here," DAAI TV chief executive officer Hong Tjin told The Jakarta Post on Monday at the TV station's studio on the sixth floor of the ITC Mangga Dua office building, in North Jakarta.

Besides trying to be different, Hong said DAAI TV considered environmental issues, such as floods, were critical and needed to be seriously supported and addressed.

The TV station, which uses channel 59 UHF, includes environmental themes, ranging from global warming to garbage recycling, in its programs, which include talk shows, film documentaries and news coverage.

As well as airing environmental programs, DAAI TV is also involved in several environmental activities, such as a mangrove planting program currently underway in Jakarta's coastal areas.

"Can we get profit from airing these environmental programs? Yes, we profit, not materially. We (earn enough to) survive, we cover our costs," Hong said.

He added many big companies, such as the Sinarmas Group, Artha Graha Group and Agung Sedayu Group, aired their advertisements, especially those relating to their corporate social responsibility efforts, on the station.

Separately, Santoso, the director of Green Radio FM (formerly Radio Utan Kayu) said the station changed its focus from straight news to environmental issues.

"We are the only radio station that now focuses on the environment. We face many environmental problems. The environment is getting worse in Jakarta," Santoso told the Post on Tuesday.

The 89.2 FM Green Radio station offers various programs on the environment, such as Green Spotlight, Green Talk (with topics on non-governmental organizations, private firms, technology and profiles), Green Business and Green Indonesia Fiesta.

"We also hold participatory on-air programs, such as a mangrove-planting program, a flood-prevention project and a tree-adoption program," Santoso said, adding that many companies, as well as individuals, supported the station's programs.

The radio station is now organizing a tree adoption program that is calling on members of the public to donate Rp 108,000 per tree, which covers a three-year maintenance period.

The program's volunteer writer, Ayu Utami, said the program aimed to plant some 4,000 tress on a five-hectare plot at Mt. Gede, in Cianjur, West Java.

"Every week, I climb the mountain and find soil erosion there," Ayu said, adding the program had planted 540 trees in one hectare, including 10 trees adopted by her and her partner, photographer Erick.

In a discussion at the Wahid Institute, organized by the Faith Movement Care for Jakarta (Gempita) last week, participants agreed on the importance of involving religious leaders in the environmental campaigns.

"We will bring the results of our discussion to our respective religious leaders," the movement leader, Catholic priest Al. Andang L. Binawan, said.

Sociologist Paulus Wirutomo said the religious leaders could modify their views from saving only human beings to also saving nature.

"We should admit that religion is still the main energy that motivates people. All religions basically carry good teachings toward the environment, but the problem is how to implement them. That's the role of religious leaders ... it's still important," Paulus said during the discussion.

Gempita comprises a group of inter-faith and environmental organizations, including Lantan Bentala, MADIA, Lakpesdam NU, Indonesia Pluralism Institute, Catholic Young Workers Union, PERAGI-FMKI KAJ, PEPULIH, Gropesh, Blue Voice, AREK, PSIK, Rahima, GKI Kemang Pratama Church, Bekasi and Conservation Indonesia.

Hong Tjhin said that values of Buddhism inspired the environmental programs on DAAI TV -- similar to its "sister" station DAAI (read: Tai) TV of Taiwan.

"I think all religion carries the same message on conserving the environment. Buddhism, for example, has a value that the earth is enough for people to earn living but don't be greedy," he said.

Although established in separate legal entities, Hong said DAAI TV and the Buddha Tzu Chi foundation had the same vision and mission; safeguarding humanity and conserving the environment.

"Our name (DAAI) means great love or universal love. We want to spread love, not just for human beings, but also to nature," he said.

Santoso said his radio environmental programs were not inspired by religious values, but rather out of concern for humanity and the environment.

"There are no religious values in the programs. It's just an environmental movement, like Greenpeace," he said.

Ayu, the author of novels Saman and Larung, said she did not believe that religion played an important role in conserving the environment.

"But if we could use religions teachings to help preserve the environment, then why not?" she said during the discussion.

Baptist congregation to try resolving dispute over worship place in court.
JAKARTA, June 5 (Compass Direct News) – Members of the Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI) in Tangerang, Banten province, confronted and threatened to kill church leader Bedali Hulu yesterday as he visited his elderly mother-in-law in a rented home formerly used as a meeting place for his congregation.


For the past 18 months Hulu’s Jakarta Baptist Christian Church (GKJB) in Pisangan village, Sepatan district has wrestled for the right to hold church services in the village. Members will soon take the matter to court in hopes of finding a permanent solution to the dispute.


Yesterday’s confrontation by the Muslim extremist FPI was the latest in a series of threats. Last week as the congregation held a simple meeting in a church member’s home – sharing a meal and singing a few hymns – FPI members arrived and repeated threats first issued in November to raid the homes of church members if meetings continued. (See Compass Direct News, “Islamic Groups Secure Closure of Two Churches,” December 3, 2007.)


Until January 2007, the congregation met in Hulu’s rented home. Following threats however, they began alternating meetings in various members’ homes.


Hulu established the church in June 2005 and held services in his home until December 2006 without objection from neighbors. He had obtained written permission from a local official to hold the services and the church was registered with Religious Affairs authorities.


When the church planned to hold a Christmas celebration in December 2006, however, FPI members began an extended intimidation campaign with the express goal of ending “illegal” Christian activity in the village.


Initially, the FPI sent a letter to the church warning it not to hold the Christmas program. Bedali immediately reported this to the police, who provided security during the celebration – but in subsequent disputes took the side of the FPI.


Hulu finally filed an official complaint in November 2007 after the FPI threatened to raid church members’ homes. Police, however, lost the document, forcing Hulu to file a second complaint this January.


Lawyer Djawadin Saragih advised Hulu to file a third complaint on May 21, citing continual harassment from FPI members.


Hulu has since moved to other rented accommodation, leaving his mother-in-law in residence in the original house used for church meetings.


FPI Threatens Church Members

On November 4, as children attended Sunday school at the church, a group of around 10 FPI members arrived and broke up the meeting. Hulu immediately reported this incident to police.


Hulu met with FPI leaders and local officials on November 8, but they reached no agreement.


On November 19, several FPI associates sent a letter to Hulu warning him and his family to leave the village within six days or the extremists would chase them out. Police advised Hulu to leave temporarily, but his wife and mother-in-law were allowed to remain.


When Hulu filed another police report, the police summoned him to a meeting at the home of FPI leader Habib Muhammad Assegaf. While Hulu and his wife met with Assegaf, a church member sent a text message informing them that a small mob had attacked the church, breaking windows and taking church property including a cross. The mob also forced Hulu’s mother-in-law to leave the building.


Hulu reported this incident to district police in Tangerang on November 22, who informed him that he could either return to Pisangan and cease all religious activity, or pursue the matter through legal channels. Weary of the constant pressure, Hulu filed an official complaint.


Pisangan FPI leader Ocit (known only by a single name) then demanded that Hulu withdraw his complaint or else FPI members would raid the homes of individual church members.


Hostility, Intimidation

The threats in November were part of a long series of attempts to close down the church. On January 4, 2007, just a few weeks after the disputed Christmas celebration, a mob led by local FPI members surrounded the church during Sunday worship and demanded that it cease holding services as it did not have a full permit for a place of worship.


A Joint Ministerial Decree promulgated in 1969 and revised in 2006 requires a congregation of at least 90 adult members, the permission of at least 60 neighbors and a permit from local authorities to establish a place of worship. Church leaders say it is virtually impossible to obtain a permit under these terms.

In January 2007 the GKJB congregation had approximately 12 adult members and little hope of reaching 90. Hulu, however, had obtained written permission from a local official to hold services in his home.


He reported the January 2007 incident to police, who asked him to stop holding services. When he refused, FPI members forcibly locked the building and took the key.

En route to a meeting with Assegaf, police handed Hulu a sheet of paper listing the FPI’s terms for settling the dispute: that Hulu cease holding services in his home and the church apply for a full worship permit. Under immense pressure, Hulu signed the agreement, and the church began holding services in different church members’ homes from week to week.
This practice continued until October last year, when FPI leader Ocit and associate Atang Kosasih again warned Hulu that they would not tolerate any illegal religious activity in the village.

In November, the congregation decided to relocate services to a nearby city while they pursued a case against the FPI.

Yesus lahir di Bethlehem, dalam masa pemerintahan Kaisar Augustus. Saat itu, Maria telah bertunangan dengan Yusuf, seorang tukang kayu (Mat. 1:1; Lukas 3:23; bandingkan Yoh. 7:42). KelahiranNya pertama kali disampaikan langsung oleh para malaikat kepada para gembala (Lukas 2:8-20). Disana, di Bait Allah, "ditengah-tengah alim ulama" semua yang mendengar Dia "tercengang dengan hikmat dan jawaban-jawabanNya" (Lukas 2:41, dst.).

Delapan belas tahun yang tidak diketahui, kecuali pada saat Ia kembali ke Nazareth dan "dan bertambah-tambah hikmat melebihi orang lain", dan "dikasihi Tuhan dan manusia" (Lukas 2:52). Sangat mungkin dia bekerja sebagai tukang kayu seperti halnya Yusuf.

If Jesus was the Son of God, why did He call Himself the Son of Man?

This sounds like some kind of contradiction at first glance, but in fact there is no contradiction. An examination of Scripture reveals that the phrase "Son of Man" carries broad significance.

First of all, even if the phrase "Son of Man" is a reference to Jesus' humanity, it is not a denial of His deity. By becoming a man, Jesus did not cease being God. The incarnation of Christ did not involve the subtraction of deity, but the addition of humanity. Jesus clearly claimed to be God on many occasions (Matthew 16:16,17; John 8:58; 10:30). But in addition to being divine, He was also human (see Philippians 2:6-8). He had two natures (divine and human) conjoined in one person.

Further, Scripture indicates that Jesus was not denying His deity by referring to Himself as the Son of Man. In fact, it is highly revealing that the term "Son of Man" is used in Scripture in contexts of Christ's deity. For example, the Bible says that only God can forgive sins (Isaiah 43:25; Mark 2:7). But as the "Son of Man," Jesus had the power to forgive sins (Mark 2:10). Likewise, Christ will return to earth as the "Son of Man" in clouds of glory to reign on earth (Matthew 26:63-64). In this passage, Jesus is citing Daniel 7:13 where the Messiah is described as the "Ancient of Days," a phrase used to indicate His deity (cf. Daniel 7:9).

Further, when Jesus was asked by the high priest whether He was the "Son of God" (Matthew 26:63), He responded affirmatively, declaring that He was the "Son of Man" who would come in power and great glory (verse 64). This indicated that Jesus Himself used the phrase "Son of Man" to indicate His deity as the Son of God.

Finally, the phrase "Son of Man" also emphasizes who Jesus is in relation to His incarnation and His work of salvation. In the Old Testament (Leviticus 25:25-26, 48-49; Ruth 2:20), the next of kin (one related by blood) always functioned as the "kinsman-redeemer" of a family member who needed redemption from jail. Jesus became related to us "by blood" (that is, He became a man) so He could function as our Kinsman-Redeemer and rescue us from sin.
